It was an American Idol finale for the record books: Steven Tyler sang "Dream On," Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony shared a dance and a kiss on stage, country legends Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood wowed, James Durbin got his happy metal ending with Judas Priest, Tom Jones showed the men of the top 13 how it's done and Haley Reinhart even sang a snazzy version of "Steppin' Out with My Baby" with Tony Bennett.

But the night belonged to Scotty McCreery, who took home the Idol crown.

"It was just a moment I will never forget," said McCreery, 17, of his win. "This was all about me being able to accomplish my dreams. I'm an American Idol. That was a huge dream. It's time for me to start my career. The real work begins."

Runner-up Lauren Alaina, who says she knew McCreery was going to win, had nothing but kind words for her fellow finalist. "It was God's plan for Scotty to get first," said Alaina, 16. "No matter what, that was the way it is supposed to be."

Though her voice was giving her trouble on the night of her final performances, the singer says it didn't affect the votes. "My voice had nothing to do with it. Things happen for a reason."

And what was the reason behind the smooch the two shared on stage?

"She stays true to her word," McCreery said with a chuckle. "She told me she was going to do that. It's all fun and games."

Though McCreery says they two aren't dating, he couldn't stop boasting about Alaina. "She's a sweetheart," he said. "She's just so amazing. It's a special relationship we have."

The season 10 finalists even plan to duet. "We've talked about it for a while," McCreery said. "I think we sound great together so I think that would be a wise choice."

Next, McCreery plans to get in the studio and record a great country album as soon as he can. "It's my duty," he said. "I owe it my fans."

But first he's looking forward to a little downtime. "I just want to chill on the couch," he said, "and watch Sports Center."

Shunning an immediate overseas honeymoon and opting instead for a quiet weekend at a secret British location, Prince William and Kate Middleton made it clear Saturday they want to carve out some space for themselves.
This fight for privacy is crucial if they are to avoid being hounded like William's mother, the late Princess Diana, whose every move was tailed.
The royal newlyweds started the day by asking the media not to intrude this weekend and to leave them alone when they eventually start their honeymoon. Separately, palace officials also asked the media not to reveal where the couple live near William's Royal Air Force base in Wales.
He will return to military duty there as a helicopter rescue pilot after the holiday weekend, which ends Monday.
The request for privacy was in stark contrast to their accessibility to the public over the previous two days. On the eve of Friday's wedding at Westminster Abbey, William greeted crowds on the streets outside his official residence in an impromptu gesture.
The royal couple also dazzled the masses on their wedding day with an open-topped carriage ride from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace and a pair of kisses on a palace balcony. They also emerged from the gates of the palace with the prince at the wheel of his father's Aston Martin, which had balloons on the back and a "Just Wed" license plate.

Previously, officials said William had scheduled two weeks of leave from his military duties amid indications that the honeymoon would begin a day or two after the wedding. But the couple said on the website that they would take an overseas honeymoon at a later date.
The ultimate destination remains a closely-guarded secret, although a number of idyllic locations have been mentioned. German media reports, which were not confirmed, suggested the couple planned to spend a honeymoon at a small private island in the Seychelles.
The reports were based on the comments of a German real estate agent who claimed to have rented the island to the British royals.
Privacy has long been the couple's main concern while planning their honeymoon. They are thought to have considered private islands in the Caribbean — although photographers on boats could conceivably get pictures of them cavorting on a beach — and hideaways in Africa, where William has traveled extensively in the past.

But the desire for privacy — something they enjoyed during their university days because the usually voracious British media agreed to give the young prince some space — may become a dominant theme of their marriage, especially with the worldwide interest generated by their glamorous wedding.
The BBC said 17.5 million viewers watched Kate Middleton arrive at Westminster Abbey in her wedding gown. Sky News said 661,000 viewers watched her entrance, and around a million logged on to their website. Millions more watched around the world, and the images from the wedding will be reprinted for years.
Certainly, the Middletons and the royal family appeared to want to send out a clear signal that the wedding was definitely over. Middleton's parents, her brother and sister left their London hotel in the afternoon, smiled and waved at waiting photographers, and then drove back to their home in Bucklebury, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of London.
Royal commentator Dickie Arbiter said the couple is likely to be able to live normally when they return to the area around the military base in north Wales where William is based.
"They've been left alone there in the past and there's no reason they won't be left alone there now," he said.
Arbiter said that it will be relatively easy for the prince's staff, which has wide experience in security and logistics, to set up the honeymoon so the couple would not be disturbed. The honeymoon is expected to be briefer than that of William's parents, Prince Charles and Diana, who combined a two-week Mediterranean cruise with several extended breaks in Britain.

Jeremy Renner Will Be Your New 'Bourne' Star

Your newest, biggest movie star. Four years ago, Jeremy Renner was playing second-fiddle to Minnie Driver in critically reviled movies. (And starring in canceled television series.) Then he made a little movie called "The Hurt Locker." Since then, he has been nominated for two Oscars, been cast as a superhero and is anchoring two of the most valuable action franchises on earth. We'd say making "Locker" was a smart career move.

Last night, Deadline announced the news everyone had been waiting for: The role of the superspy character replacing Matt Damon's Jason Bourne in the "Bourne" franchise has been offered to Renner, who's expected to join on as soon as scheduling issues are resolved. Universal had been looking at several other actors -- including "Animal Kingdom"'s Joel Edgerton and Garrett Hedlund from "Tron: Legacy" -- but they landed on Renner for "The Bourne Legacy." "Legacy" is written and directed by Tony Gilroy (who wrote all three of the "Bourne" screenplays and also wrote and directed "Michael Clayton") and is expected to start filming this September, with a release date around August 2012.

Renner, who, again, was unknown only three years ago, is taking on projects like a starving man suddenly put in front of a buffet. (Even though he's new to the scene, he has been around a long time; he turns 40 this year.) He just finished filming "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" with Tom Cruise -- it is anticipated that he will take over that franchise, though he's actually only nine years younger than Cruise -- and he also will play "Hawkeye" in the upcoming "Avengers movie." (He's said to have a cameo as Hawkeye in this summer's "Thor" as well.)

Finding the right actor was key for Universal to keep the "Bourne" franchise alive. When director Paul Greengrass announced he was done with the "Bourne" films, star Matt Damon said he would leave the franchise too, claiming he would only work with Greengrass. (He has since left the door ajar for "five years from now.") Universal couldn't let such a profitable franchise die, though, so they gave Gilroy the director's chair and set about casting a new lead, someone who is not Jason Bourne, but is certainly cut from his proverbial cloth. That person was Renner. Hence the "Legacy" of the title: The hope is that someday Damon and Renner can team for a future Super Bourne Film. (The legacy aspect is still strange, though; Damon is just one year older than Renner.)

Fil-am Thia Megia eliminated from American Idol

The youngest contestant to make it to American Idol's top 13 has left the show.

Sixteen-year-old Filipino-American Thia Megia was eliminated from American Idol on Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila) after her rendition of "Daniel" was not well-received by television viewers. She got the lowest votes together with Naima Adepapo, who was also eliminated from the show.

Megia landed a spot in the top 13 with her cover of Irene Cara's "Out Here on My Own" from "Fame" and was praised for her perfect pitch.

However, judges had said they would like to see her step out of the box. Last week, Megia's version of Martha and the Vandellas' "(Love is Like A) Heatwave" was lauded by the judges and wowed America, but it was not enough to keep her in the show after her less than stellar performance of "Daniel," an Elton John hit.

"When you find the right song, the voice appears," said Steven Tyler.

"You internalized it and that was a beautiful moment for you," said fellow judge Jennifer Lopez.

"It showed a very relaxed side of you and people could hear your beautiful voice," said Randy Jackson, the third judge. Though the comments were kind, it seems America was looking for more than Megia's beautiful voice.

Megia also performed Vanessa Williams' "Colors of the Wind" and Michael Jackson's "Smile" in American Idol's tenth season.

MANILA, Philippines – Beauty queen Venus Raj, 2010 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and Miss Universe 4th runner up, laughed off speculations that she had something to do with Rica Peralejo and some hosts leaving ABS-CBN morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG).”
Raj, along with Iya Villania, will join the UKG gang starting Monday. Raj will deliver the latest and the hottest showbiz reports.
She will also host the newest segment of the show, “Barangay Bida,” which will air every Friday.
Peralejo bid goodbye to the show on Friday last week.
In her live interview on “The Buzz” Sunday, the 22-year-old beauty pointed out that she is in no position to demand who should go or who should stay in the TV program.
She explained that some hosts opted to leave the TV show so as to give them more time to do other things.
In Peralejo’s case, Raj said the young actress-host is planning to study. “Gusto din niyang mag-concentrate sa kanyang pag-aaral.”
She added: “May iba magco-concentrate sa news. ‘Yong iba magco-concentrate sa projects, kung anumang meron sila. Hindi naman po ako ang naging dahilan.”
Raj was also all praises for her UKG co-hosts. “Sobrang accommodating. Hindi mahirap mag-adjust kung ganoon kabait ang makakasama ko.”
As for criticisms that she is not a good choice to become a new host of UKG, the 2010 Miss Universe 4th placer said she respects their opinions. She asked them to give her a chance to show that she can do her job.
“Hindi ko tatanggapin ang isang project na hindi ko kaya. Alam kong kaya ko kaya tinanggap ko,” she said.

Bb. Pilipinas titlist, 2 others killed in car crash — report

(Updated 10:06 pm) A Binibining Pilipinas beauty contest titleholder and two of her companions were killed after their car crashed into a passenger bus in Camarines Sur on Saturday morning, a radio report said.

Bb. Pilipinas-International 2009 Melody Gersbach, her driver Santos Ramos and her manager Alvin Orense died on the spot after the Innova car they were riding collided head-on with a Guevarra bus at Barangay Pawili in Bula town at past 11 a.m. Saturday, Camarines Sur provincial police director Col. Jonathan Ablang said in a phone interview.

Ablang added that a fourth person in the car, identified as designer Ronald Lita, survived the accident and is currently undergoing treatment at the Bula Medical Center.

Six other passengers of the bus were hurt in the road mishap, according to provincial police chief.

Based on initial investigation, Gersbach’s car came from Legazpi City in Albay and was heading to Naga City in Camarines Sur for a local beauty pageant when it figured in the accident.

The passenger bus reportedly overtook a motorcycle and failed to return to the right lane, causing it to collide head-on with the beauty queen’s vehicle.

Ablang said that the bus driver, identified as Wilson Fotillas, is already in police custody after initially fleeing. Fotillas will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple injuries, he added.

The remains of the fatalities are currently at a funeral parlor in Barangay Anayan in Pili town. They are set to be fetched by Gersbach’s family and friends later in the evening.

But you see, it is very hard to say that Sarah will be the undisputed box-office queen. MANILA, Philippines—Yes, Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has a girlfriend. She is a councilor in Valenzuela City.
No, he did not think she was planning to run for Congress.
These were Aquino’s cautious answers when he was peppered with questions on Wednesday about gossip circulating in text messages and the internet that his girlfriend, whom he refused to name, was eyeing a congressional seat.
"I think she’s opting for reelection," Aquino told reporters. "She hasn’t told me she has changed her mind," said Aquino, but quickly added that it would be up to his girlfriend to decide what political road to take, and that he would be there to support her.
It was the first time the bachelor senator, who is now being touted as a possible presidential candidate, talked about his personal life.
Aquino, the only son of the late president Corazon Aquino and martyred opposition leader former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., both national icons, revealed that he and his girlfriend would celebrate their first anniversary as a couple next month.
He had already introduced her to his mother, who died on Aug. 1.
Aquino appealed to reporters not to insist that he name her. He said his girlfriend had been recently at the receiving end of many requests by some people.
"I don’t want to add to the chaos in her life," Aquino said.
The tabloid People’s Tonight, however, has already identified the senator’s girlfriend as 29-year-old Councilor Shalani Soledad, a pretty and unassuming political leader in Valenzuela City.
Asked whether his girlfriend would be supportive if he were to run for the presidency next year, Aquino said they haven’t had time to discuss the issue.
"I don’t think, if I have a decision, she will not be supportive of it," he said.
Soledad’s official website describes her as a native of Catanduanes and a graduate of Human Resources Management at De La Salle’s College of St. Benilde.
She used to work in the Senate as a staff member in the office of Senator Panfilo Lacson in the Senate (2001-2003).
A source close to the senator claimed the two first met in 2000 or 2001 when Soledad interviewed him for a media project. They met again, this time by accident, in August 2008 at Alfredo’s restaurant in Quezon City. Both were dining with their respective friends but they had their picture taken with each other and exchanged phone numbers.
The following month, Aquino reportedly introduced her to some of his friends, although he said they were just going out.
Aquino has been previously linked to a stewardess, a staff member of Senator Francis Pangilinan and two actresses.

'Jaws' Shark Hunted Down

The star of "Jaws" has been found resting in a Los Angeles junkyard.

No, not Richard Dreyfuss -- the shark! With the 35th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster just around the corner, an NPR reporter set out to track down the mechanical beast that struck fear into the hearts of so many.

In order to maximize their control over the creature, the "Jaws" filmmakers built three sharks for their 1975 movie. All created from the same mold, the sharks were dubbed "Bruce" after Spielberg's lawyer, Bruce Ramer. The gigantic metal creatures were 25-feet long and weighed hundreds of pounds. The heads alone came in at 400 lbs. apiece, with jaws the size of a small human.

When reporter and "Jaws"-enthusiast Cory Turner set out to track down Bruce's whereabouts, he went straight to the source -- the movie's director. A spokesman for Steven Spielberg explained that the original Bruces had all been destroyed, as no one had thought to save them.

But theories circulated on a Facebook page for the famous shark that another Bruce might be out there. After a little research, Turner discovered that a fourth shark had indeed been cast from the original mold, just months after its brothers were constructed. The baby of the Bruce family was created for display at Universal Studios Theme Park, where it hung by its tail for fifteen years.

In 1990, the shark was taken down and shipped out to destinations unknown. Turner picked up the phone and started dialing junkyards. He finally found the creature in a yard in the Sun Valley area of Southern California -- just minutes away from Universal. Turner brought the team who built Bruce -- art department members Joe Alves and Roy Arbogast to verify the shark's authenticity.

"It's the real one," Arbogast told Turner after examining the creature. "It's just kinda' nice to see it again after 25 or 30 years. It's amazing that it's still here."

Bruce's discovery couldn't come at a better time. There's talk that Universal might be considering a 3D "Jaws" remake -- with comedian Tracy Morgan in the shark-hunter role. Perhaps Bruce will find his way onto the silver screen once again.

I was aimlessly wandering around CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines) when I sighted what seemed to be structures amid a clump of coconut trees. So I went further to explore what looked like a park, half-expecting to sit for a while in the shade. What I found instead were bare-footed kids playing and later on people lying on cartons under the shade. And then it dawned on me that these people could be ACTUALLY living here. From afar, camouflaged by trees and foliage, I spotted makeshift tents. And more kids. I tried making conversation with Joey and Jingjing -- they won’t give me their surnames -- and learn more about the people living there. They told me there are about 200 people who live in this park Joey, a 47-year-old native of Iloilo, was the more amiable one, telling me stories about how they are able to survive through "pangangalakal" or the picking up thrown away stuff they can sell -- along Roxas Boulevard and nearby areas. According to this marker I found, the 6th ASEAN Square Sculpture Symposium was ordered built in 1989 by former Foreign Affairs secretary Raul Manglapus. Some of the sculptures produced during this gathering were put in this park right beside the Sarimanok site, the venue for the Miss Universe pageant held in the country back in 1974. Spain’s Amparo Munoz, who later became actress, won that year. I wanted to linger for a while but seeing more and more kids gathering around me begging for alms -- not to mention this suspicious -- looking character who tried to lure me to look more “statues” somewhere -- I decided to go. So then maybe it’s just fair to warn people to be extra cautious should you find yourself in this park along Roxas Boulevard, fronting Aliw Theater right beside CCP. The sculptures look interesting but in dire need of restoration. Unfortunately, I won’t guarantee that the place is safe enough for a leisurely stroll.

Having her own family drastically altered Nanette Medved's outlook and life priorities that show business had to take an indefinite backseat.

PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) spotted the former sexy actress last Sunday, February 21, at Century Tuna's Superbods Run held at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Nanette participated in the event together with her businessman husband. The couple's two adorable kids were also present at the early-morning activity.

Trading her showbiz career for a domesticated lifestyle was an easy decision to make according to the ex-Darna star. Nanette was even more convinced that she made the right choice after giving birth.

"I think that's part of the reason why going back to showbiz, at least for me, is less compelling. Kasi in my case, I'm worried kasi maski na papaano, you know naman that in show business, kahit may intriga o wala, gagawa at gagawa [ng issue] siyempre para mapag-usapan," Nanette, who just arrived with her family from Japan, explained to PEP.

She added, "It's hard for regular families, I mean, there are enough problems and ayoko nang dagdagan 'di ba? So, maigi na 'yong ganito."

Cyrus's solo music career began with the release of her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus on June 23, 2007. Her second album, Breakout was released on July 22, 2008. Breakout is Cyrus's first album that does not involve the Hannah Montana franchise. Both albums debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.

In 2008, Cyrus was listed among artists and entertainers as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in The World.

Cyrus was twelve years old when she originally auditioned for Disney for the lead role of Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana, as well as the show's "best friend" roles, but Disney Channel executives judged her to be too small. Cyrus had a brief cameo in the 2007 television movie High School Musical 2 credited as "Girl at Pool," where she danced before the end credits in front of the pool wearing a yellow baby doll top and denim Bermuda shorts. Cyrus also guest-starred as Yatta on Disney Channel's The Emperor's New School. Cyrus provided the voice of Penny in the 2008 computer-animated film, Bolt.

While attending the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix premiere, Cyrus stated that they are working on ideas for a Hannah Montana movie. The feature-length film is to be produced by Cyrus's both on and off-screen dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.
On December 4 2008, Sun Times announced that Cyrus will tackle another Disney project — a sequel to the Chicago-set 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting. Bob Marley was born in the small village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica as Nesta Robert Marley. A Jamaican passport official would later swap his first and middle names.His father Norval Sinclair Marley was a white Scottish Jamaican. Norval was a Marine officer and captain, as well as a plantation overseer, when he married Cedella Booker, a black Jamaican then eighteen years old. Norval provided financial support for his wife and child, but seldom saw them, as he was often away on trips. In 1955, when Marley was 10 years old, his father died of a heart attack at age 60. Marley suffered racial prejudice as a youth, because of his mixed racial origins and faced questions about his own racial identity throughout his life. He once reflected:

I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Marley became friends with Neville "Bunny" Livingston (later known as Bunny Wailer), with whom he started to play music. He left school at the age of 14 to make music with Joe Higgs, a local singer and devout Rastafari. It was at a jam session with Higgs and Livingston that Marley met Peter McIntosh (later known as Peter Tosh), who had similar musical ambitions.

In 1962, Marley recorded his first two singles, "Judge Not" and "One Cup of Coffee", with local music producer Leslie Kong. These songs, released on the Beverley's label under the pseudonym of Bobby Martell, attracted little attention. Aoki was born in New York City, and grew up in California and London, attending highschool at The American School in London. WASHINGTON – Earth seems to have its first fuzzy photos of alien planets outside our solar system, images captured by two teams of astronomers. The pictures show four likely planets that appear as specks of white, nearly indecipherable except to the most eagle-eyed experts. All are trillions of miles away — three of them orbiting the same star, and the fourth circling a different star.

None of the four giant gaseous planets are remotely habitable or remotely like Earth. But they raise the possibility of others more hospitable.

It's only a matter of time before "we get a dot that's blue and Earthlike," said astronomer Bruce Macintosh of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. He led one of the two teams of photographers.

"It is a step on that road to understand if there are other planets like Earth and potentially life out there," he said.

Macintosh's team used two ground-based telescopes, while the second team relied on photos from the 18-year-old Hubble Space Telescope to gather images of the exoplanets — planets that don't circle our sun. The research from both teams was published in Thursday's online edition of the journal Science.

In the past 13 years, scientists have discovered more than 300 planets outside our solar system, but they have done so indirectly, by measuring changes in gravity, speed or light around stars.

NASA's space sciences chief Ed Weiler said the actual photos are important. He compared it to a hunt for elusive elephants: "For years we've been hearing the elephants, finding the tracks, seeing the trees knocked down by them, but we've never been able to snap a picture. Now we have a picture."

In a news conference Thursday, Weiler said this fulfills the last of the major goals that NASA had for the Hubble telescope before it launched in 1990: "This is an 18 1/2-year dream come true."

There are disputes about whether these are the first exoplanet photos. Others have made earlier claims, but those pictures haven't been confirmed as planets or universally accepted yet. The photos released Thursday are being published in a scientifically prominent journal, but that still hasn't convinced all the experts. Alan Boss, an exoplanet expert at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and Harvard exoplanet hunter Lisa Kaltenegger both said more study is needed to confirm these photos are proven planets and not just brown dwarf stars.

MIT planetary scientist Sara Seager, at the NASA press conference, said earlier planetary claims "are in a gray area." But these discoveries, "everybody would agree is a planet," said Seager, who was not part of either planet-finding team.

The Hubble team this spring compared a 2006 photo to one of the same body taken by Hubble in 2004. The scientists used that to show that the object orbited a star and was part of a massive red dust ring which is usually associated with planets — making it less likely to be a dwarf star.

Macintosh's team used ground-based telescopes to spot three other planets orbiting a different star. That makes it less likely they are a pack of brown dwarf stars.

The planet discovered by Hubble is one of the smallest exoplanets found yet. It's somewhere between the size of Neptune and three times bigger than Jupiter. And it may have a Saturn-like ring.

It circles the star Fomalhaut, pronounced FUM-al-HUT, which is Arabic for "mouth of the fish." It's in the constellation Piscis Austrinus and is relatively close by — a mere 148 trillion miles away, practically a next-door neighbor by galactic standards. The planet's temperature is around 260 degrees, but that's cool by comparison to other exoplanets.

The planet is only about 200 million years old, a baby compared to the more than 4 billion-year-old planets in our solar system. That's important to astronomers because they can study what Earth and planets in our solar system may have been like in their infancy, said Paul Kalas at the University of California, Berkeley. Kalas led the team using Hubble to discover Fomalhaut's planet.

One big reason the picture looks fuzzy is that the star Fomalhaut is 100 million times brighter than its planet.

The team led by Macintosh at Lawrence Livermore found its planets a little earlier, spotting the first one in 2007, but taking extra time to confirm the trio of planets circling a star in the Pegasus constellation. The star is about 767 trillion miles away, but visible with binoculars. It's called HR 8799, and the three planets orbiting it are seven to 10 times larger than Jupiter, Macintosh said.

"I've been doing this for eight years and after eight years we get three at once," he said.

Idaho has much variation in its climate. Although the state's western border is located 300 miles (480 km) from the Pacific Ocean,[citation needed] the maritime influence is still felt in Idaho, especially in the winter when cloud cover, humidity, and precipitation are at their highest points. This influence has a moderating effect in the winter where temperatures are not as low as would otherwise be expected for a northern state with a mostly elevated altitude. The maritime influence is lowest in the southeastern part of the state where the precipitation patterns are often reversed, with wetter summers and drier winters, and seasonal temperature differences more extreme, showing a more continental climate.

Climate in Idaho can be hot, although extended periods over 100 °F (38 °C) for the maximum temperature are rare. Hot summer days are tempered by the low relative humidity and cooler evenings during summer months since, for most of the state, the highest diurnal difference in temperature is often in the summer. Winters can be cold, although extended periods of bitter cold weather below zero are unusual.

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION

One of the areas where we are in danger of losing our competitive edge is our space program. When I was growing up, NASA inspired the world with achievements we are still proud of. Today, we have an administration that has set ambitious goals for NASA without giving NASA the support it needs to reach them. As a result, they've had to cut back on research, and trim their programs, which means that after the Space Shuttle shuts down in 2010, we're going to have to rely on Russian spacecraft to keep us in orbit.

We cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I will help close the gap and ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the Shuttle goes out of service by working with Senator Bill Nelson to add at least one additional Space Shuttle flight beyond 2010; by supporting continued funding for NASA; by speeding the development of the Shuttle's successor; and by making sure that all those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the Shuttle is retired -- because we cannot afford to lose their expertise.

More broadly, we need a real vision for space exploration. To help formulate this vision, I'll reestablish the National Aeronautics and Space Council so that we can develop a plan to explore the solar system -- a plan that involves both human and robotic missions, and enlists both international partners and the private sector. And as America leads the world to long-term exploration of the moon, Mars, and beyond, let's also tap NASA's ingenuity to build the airplanes of tomorrow and to study our own planet so we can combat global climate change. Under my watch, NASA will inspire the world, make America stronger, and help grow the economy here in Florida.

NASA is about more than just space exploration. Quite a lot of the innovation that has come from NASA has trickled down to the general population. NASA innovations include:

MRI technology.
Advanced small lasers, like those used for laser eye surgery.
Ergonomics
Running shoe cushioning technology.
Satellite television.
Popular purified water filtration systems.
Memory foam for mattresses.
Bar coding
Advanced fire resistant materials.
Heat-retaining materials.

Each of those innovations were within the NASA program but were adapted in some way for commercial use.

While I am a proponent of affordable public health care, the idea that diverting money from NASA will make this a reality is a stretch. In 2007 the NASA budget was $16.2 billion, 3.5% less than they requested and the same as 2006. Let's see how that compares to other agencies:

The national budget for 2007 was $2.784 trillion, according to GPO documents. This is federal only.
The national budget for social programs in 2007, including HHS, VA, Social Security, The Dep of Agriculture, Labor and Housing was $1.581 trillion.
The Department of Defense, including Homeland Security, accounted for $653 billion.
Interest payments on the national debt of almost $9 trillion was $400 billion.

NASA's budget accounted for 0.58% of all federal spending.
The Department of Defense budget was more than 40 times more than NASA.
Federal social programs received 98 times more than NASA. That's federal only, and does not include state and local government programs.
Eliminating the NASA budget would add just over 1% to the federal budget for social programs.

$16.2 billion seems like an awful lot to us, but it's a very small amount relative to the federal budget. Additionally, consider that as of 2006 NASA had about 17k employees.
