Idaho

The State of Idaho is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States of America. The state's largest city and capital is Boise. Residents are called "Idahoans." Idaho was admitted to the Union on 3 July 1890 as the 43rd state.

According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2007 the population for Idaho was 1,499,402. The state's postal abbreviation is ID. Idaho's nickname is the Gem State because of its abundance of natural resources. The state motto is Esto Perpetua (Latin for "Let it be forever").

Idaho borders six states and one Canadian province. The states of Washington and Oregon are to the west, Nevada and Utah are to the south, and Montana and Wyoming are to the east. Idaho also shares a short (48 miles (77 km)) border with Canada: the province of British Columbia is to the north. The landscape is rugged with some of the largest unspoiled natural areas in the United States. It is a Rocky Mountain state with abundant natural resources and scenic areas. The state has snow-capped mountain ranges, rapids, vast lakes and steep canyons. The waters of Snake River rush through Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in the United States. Shoshone Falls plunges down rugged cliffs from a height greater than that of Niagara Falls. The major rivers in Idaho are the Snake River, the Clark Fork/Pend Oreille River, the Clearwater River and the Salmon River. Other significant rivers include the Coeur d'Alene/Spokane River, the Boise River and the Payette River. The Port of Lewiston, at the confluence of the Clearwater and the Snake Rivers is the farthest inland seaport in the Pacific Northwest.

Idaho's highest point is Borah Peak, 12,662 ft (3,859 m), in the Lost River Range north of Mackay. Idaho's lowest point, 745 ft (227 m), is in Lewiston, where the Clearwater River joins the Snake River and continues into Washington.

Southern Idaho, including the Boise metropolitan area, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and Twin Falls are in the Mountain Time Zone. (A legislative oddity (15 U.S.C. ch.6 § 264) theoretically places this region in the Pacific Time Zone, but this error is not widely known and is universally ignored.) Areas north of the Salmon River, including Coeur d'Alene, Moscow, Lewiston, and Sandpoint are in the Pacific Time Zone and revolve commercially and culturally around Spokane, Washington

Climate

Idaho has much variation in its climate. Although the state's western border is located 300 miles (480 km) from the Pacific Ocean,[citation needed] the maritime influence is still felt in Idaho, especially in the winter when cloud cover, humidity, and precipitation are at their highest points. This influence has a moderating effect in the winter where temperatures are not as low as would otherwise be expected for a northern state with a mostly elevated altitude. The maritime influence is lowest in the southeastern part of the state where the precipitation patterns are often reversed, with wetter summers and drier winters, and seasonal temperature differences more extreme, showing a more continental climate.

Climate in Idaho can be hot, although extended periods over 100 °F (38 °C) for the maximum temperature are rare. Hot summer days are tempered by the low relative humidity and cooler evenings during summer months since, for most of the state, the highest diurnal difference in temperature is often in the summer. Winters can be cold, although extended periods of bitter cold weather below zero are unusual.

nasa

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION

One of the areas where we are in danger of losing our competitive edge is our space program. When I was growing up, NASA inspired the world with achievements we are still proud of. Today, we have an administration that has set ambitious goals for NASA without giving NASA the support it needs to reach them. As a result, they've had to cut back on research, and trim their programs, which means that after the Space Shuttle shuts down in 2010, we're going to have to rely on Russian spacecraft to keep us in orbit.

We cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I will help close the gap and ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the Shuttle goes out of service by working with Senator Bill Nelson to add at least one additional Space Shuttle flight beyond 2010; by supporting continued funding for NASA; by speeding the development of the Shuttle's successor; and by making sure that all those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the Shuttle is retired -- because we cannot afford to lose their expertise.

More broadly, we need a real vision for space exploration. To help formulate this vision, I'll reestablish the National Aeronautics and Space Council so that we can develop a plan to explore the solar system -- a plan that involves both human and robotic missions, and enlists both international partners and the private sector. And as America leads the world to long-term exploration of the moon, Mars, and beyond, let's also tap NASA's ingenuity to build the airplanes of tomorrow and to study our own planet so we can combat global climate change. Under my watch, NASA will inspire the world, make America stronger, and help grow the economy here in Florida.

NASA is about more than just space exploration. Quite a lot of the innovation that has come from NASA has trickled down to the general population. NASA innovations include:

MRI technology.
Advanced small lasers, like those used for laser eye surgery.
Ergonomics
Running shoe cushioning technology.
Satellite television.
Popular purified water filtration systems.
Memory foam for mattresses.
Bar coding
Advanced fire resistant materials.
Heat-retaining materials.

Each of those innovations were within the NASA program but were adapted in some way for commercial use.

While I am a proponent of affordable public health care, the idea that diverting money from NASA will make this a reality is a stretch. In 2007 the NASA budget was $16.2 billion, 3.5% less than they requested and the same as 2006. Let's see how that compares to other agencies:

The national budget for 2007 was $2.784 trillion, according to GPO documents. This is federal only.
The national budget for social programs in 2007, including HHS, VA, Social Security, The Dep of Agriculture, Labor and Housing was $1.581 trillion.
The Department of Defense, including Homeland Security, accounted for $653 billion.
Interest payments on the national debt of almost $9 trillion was $400 billion.

NASA's budget accounted for 0.58% of all federal spending.
The Department of Defense budget was more than 40 times more than NASA.
Federal social programs received 98 times more than NASA. That's federal only, and does not include state and local government programs.
Eliminating the NASA budget would add just over 1% to the federal budget for social programs.

$16.2 billion seems like an awful lot to us, but it's a very small amount relative to the federal budget. Additionally, consider that as of 2006 NASA had about 17k employees. And consider the contractors, independent research groups, manufacturers and vendors that do business with NASA - or each other, on behalf of NASA.

The fact is NASA is an integral part of our society, and the research they're doing is extremely important. It's not just about theory and "let's see if we can." There are real world applications to the work that NASA does.. . .

An artist’s rendition of NASA’s planned heavy-lift rocket orbiting Earth. Solid rocket boosters have just been ejected and the front of the rocket is opening up to reveal a lunar lander inside.

NASA will launch this vehicle, as well as other exploration cargo, using rockets that are derived from components of the Space Shuttle. This approach will allow NASA to use tried and tested components, benefit from an experienced workforce, and smoothly transition many of its operations when the Space Shuttle is retired by 2010.

NASA will continue to pursue an expanded robotic program to explore the solar system and universe. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is scheduled to launch in the fall of 2008, to map the surface of the Moon and search for future landing sites. NASA’s recent successful robotic investigations of Mars and Saturn will be followed by missions that will explore some of the least known areas of the solar system: Mercury, the asteroids, and Pluto. The Mars Science Laboratory will launch in 2009 to sharpen our scientific understanding of the red planet; future spacecraft will conduct research and test technologies to support future human exploration of this planet.

The Agency will also build on its legacy of revolutionizing the science of astronomy. NASA will continue to operate space telescopes such as Hubble, Chandra, and Spitzer, while planning for the next generation of spacecraft that will enhance our ability to find planets around other stars and peer deep into the history of the universe to better understand its origins and structure. All the while, NASA will continue to play a major part in the interagency Climate Change Science Program and participate in the international initiative on the Global Earth Observing System of Systems, retaining critical investments in satellites, technologies, and research that will improve forecasting of the weather, monitoring of forest fires, and tracking the spread of pollutants here on Earth. The Agency will also continue to develop space probes to study the Sun’s influence on Earth and the space environment. source

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney Harbour Bridge
BridgeClimb, the ultimate way to experience Sydney, is celebrating its first ten years of climbing adventures on the city’s iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. So far, over two million people have experienced the climb of their lives - now it’s your turn.
Choose between two 3 ½ hour guided experiences – The Bridge Climb or The Discovery Climb. Both Climbs reach the summit of this world famous bridge, 134 metres above Sydney Harbour and are available at Dawn, Day, Twilight or Night. To find out more about BridgeClimb’s experiences click here.source

How BridgeClimb changed the world's view of Sydney

The story began in 1989 with BridgeClimb's Founder and Chairman, Paul Cave. This was the year, his dream of making a Sydney Harbour BridgeClimb a possibility for all was born. Yet it was a dream that would face many years of challenges, amongst them: dealing with state and local government bodies, community groups and hundreds of experts on everything from safety and logistics to media, heritage and conservation issues.

Without his singular vision, commitment, persistence and entrepreneurial skills - the thrill of climbing the bridge would still be strictly limited to the army of workers who maintain this amazing landmark.

So far, over two million visitors from around the world have experienced Sydney on one of BridgeClimb's unique adventures. For many, their Climb ranks as a lifetime memory and signature Australian experience.

The experience of Climbing the bridge is also highly regarded by Sydney siders and their fellow Australians. The bridge holds a special place in their hearts and the gift of a BridgeClimb experience has become a firm favourite for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day.

Today, everyone over the age of ten, in good health, and with a sense of adventure is invited to scale the Sydney Harbour Bridge with BridgeClimb.

Together with the bridge's amazing history, spectacular developments have taken place at BridgeClimb Sydney over the last 10 years. The introduction of The Discovery Climb in 2006 - BridgeClimb's newest adventure, celebrating the Bridge's 75th anniversary in 2007, and in the year just past celebrating the world's first wedding ceremony on top of the Bridge.

To top it off, in early 2008, BridgeClimb Sydney was announced winner of the Australian Tourism Award for "Major Tourist Attractions", the first time BridgeClimb Sydney has won this prestigious award in this category.

BridgeClimb Sydney is recognised the world over and in the past 10 years welcomed celebrities such as Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman, Will Smith and Kylie Minogue in addition to Climbers from 137 different countries and territories.

To mark the 10 year anniversary BridgeClimb Sydney chose to acknowledge it's Climbers from around the globe with a world record event and complement the Bridge's long list of amazing facts and feats. On October 1, 2008 the largest collection of flags ever was assembled on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Argentina is the 8th largest country in the world and also one of the longest, which gives it a rich and diversified climate with many contrasts in geography. From country plains inhabited by its famous gauchos tending herds of cattle to Buenos Aires with its cultural riches, travellers to Argentina can enjoy any kind of holiday experience they seek.

Whether one considers its stunning natural beauty or its cosmopolitan city centres, it is impossible not to admire the zeal of Argentinians. From its cosmopolitan cities to its stunning natural beauty, the one common thread is that its people possess a genuine passion and zest for life. The tango and estancias, the beautiful national parks with its differing wildlife, the world famous glaciers of Perito Moreno, and Iguazu Falls are all part of Argentina's allure. Buenos Aires, known as South America's most European-styled city, is a worldly capital of superb shopping, exotic entertainment and exquisite dining. So much of the rest of the country is just waiting to be discovered and explored.

Hotels in Argentina are plentiful and range from the super-luxurious of Buenos Aires to the rustic and quaint lodgings one finds in Patagonia. Resorts along its lengthy coastline- one of the longest in the world- offer every style of stay for those that seek the sandy beaches or trekking along treacherous cliff-sides.

Most travellers plan varied itineraries that allow them to sample a bit of everything when visiting this vast country. A stop in bustling Buenos Aires, a visit to towering the mountains around Mendoza, tasting some of the world's best beef in the Pampas- all these things are great reasons to visit Argentina.
A great family destination, Argentina also is a favourite of backpackers, cyclers and trekkers. There is a lot to do, many places to go and the costs of doing so is reasonable when considered along comparable destinations. When travelling there in spring and autumn , be sure to pack for both cool and warm weather, as you are likely to experience a bit of everything in this wonderfully vast and varied land.

Tourist attraction

Tourism is travel for recreational or leisure purposes. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who "travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited".

Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. In 2007, there were over 903 million international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 6.6% as compared to 2006. International tourist receipts were USD 856 billion in 2007. Despite the uncertainties in the global economy, arrivals grew at around 5% during the first four months of 2008, almost a similar growth than the same period in 2007.
Tourism is vital for many countries such as U.A.E, Egypt, Greece, Thailand and many island nations such as Bahamas, Fiji, Maldives, Seychelles due to the large intake of money for businesses with their goods and services and the opportunity for employment in the service industries associated with tourism. These service industries include transportation services such as cruise ships and taxis, accommodation such as hotels and entertainment venues, and other hospitality industry services such as resorts.
